President Donald Trump is optimistic about the upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, emphasizing a productive relationship with China. However, experts warn that the current period is fraught with danger as tensions rise between the United States and the communist nation.
Trump and Xi will meet on Thursday in Washington, D.C., following their last encounter four months ago in May. Topics like artificial intelligence and trade are expected to dominate the discussions.
Gatestone Institute senior fellow Gordon Chang has expressed grave concerns, suggesting that despite the leaders’ positive rhetoric, Xi Jinping might be considering military action against the United States. According to Chang, Xi is organizing troops in preparation for conflict.
“Xi Jinping keeps talking about going to war against us… he’s preparing China’s society, civilian and military, for battle. And we think we’re at peace,” Chang stated during “Fox News Live.” “So, this is a very dangerous period for us.”
These remarks come amidst reports of China’s involvement in attacks that resulted in the death of three American soldiers in Jordan earlier this summer. Allegedly, Iran received satellite images from China before executing the attack, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Chang condemned China’s actions, saying Trump must take a firm stance against China, as engagement has worsened U.S.-China relations over time.
“Whatever one thinks of the strategic discussions the United States has with China, there’s this moral dimension that China is deliberately killing Americans,” Chang stated.
In light of new developments in the Middle East and increasing competition in artificial intelligence, the upcoming summit is expected to differ significantly from the May meeting.
Chang argues that Trump might face challenges similar to those encountered by former President Joe Biden in his 2023 meeting with Xi, noting that Xi Jinping is unlikely to compromise due to internal pressures within the Communist Party.
“Xi Jinping is facing a turbulent Communist Party at home, which means he can’t compromise. Also, he’s arrogant. He incorrectly believes that China’s on the rise while the United States is declining,” Chang explained.
The political climate suggests tensions may persist as Trump and Xi navigate complex issues.
