On Sunday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz addressed the media at the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party headquarters in Berlin. Despite recent losses, he affirmed his intention to remain in office. Merz reiterated support for reforms aimed at strengthening Europe’s largest economy.
Exit polls by the public broadcaster ARD showed the CDU receiving only 5% of votes in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This marked the party’s lowest result in any state since World War II. Meanwhile, the Alternative for Germany (AfD), recognized for its anti-migration and Russia-friendly stance, progressed notably.
Merz described the CDU’s outcome as a “disaster” but emphasized his commitment to the reform agenda. He highlighted the pressing need for difficult, possibly unpopular reforms due to existing economic and political challenges. Merz promised to proceed with steadfastness and patience.
In Berlin, exit polls estimated the CDU would secure 20% of the vote, trailing the Left party, which amassed 24.5%. The recent CDU defeat in Saxony-Anhalt against the AfD weakened Merz’s influence. This loss came as a shock to those who believed Germany had moved past nationalism through continued education and restrictive laws.
Merz, aged 70, assumed the Chancellorship 16 months ago. Despite assurances to revitalize the economy, stagnant growth and public disapproval persist. The AfD’s gains in Saxony-Anhalt raised prospects for the first far-right regional government since the war, diminishing Merz’s standing nationally.
Internal pressure grows as some CDU members call for a leadership change, although prominent figures have avoided public demands for Merz’s resignation. Calls for avoiding “personnel debates” accompany these internal discussions.
Foreseeing a challenging period post-election, Merz canceled a planned trip to New York for the U.N. General Assembly. In spite of the difficulties, he consistently maintains a commitment to fulfilling his term as Chancellor.
