Democrat Candidate Faces Controversy Over Personal Photos

New York Democrat Chris Gallant is addressing controversy surrounding private photos as he campaigns for a Congressional seat. Gallant, promoted as a military pilot, union leader, firefighter, and public servant on his website, is running in New York’s 1st Congressional District. Photos emerged showing him in BDSM-themed attire for a San Francisco fetish retailer, raising media attention.

Gallant’s attorney, Sara Azari, confirmed the authenticity of the photos and explained they were taken during a personal, consensual session with his then-partner of four years. Azari stated the photos were intended for fun and personal use and agreed that Mr. S Leather, a retailer, could use selected images for specific products. She emphasized that the agreement did not permit unrestricted publication or use by third parties.

As Gallant considered a political future, he requested the photos’ removal from the retailer’s website, which Azari noted occurred. The New York Post obtained some photographs depicting Gallant in collars, leather straps, and bondage gear. Although the images were removed as of Monday, internet archives revealed their online presence from 2011 to 2020.

“Chris was also friends with the owner of Mr. S Leather, and the shoot was intended to be fun and personal,” Azari explained in a statement to Newsweek.

The outlet additionally published an older photo of Gallant as a bartender during the Invasion of the Pines event in 2007 on Fire Island. Gallant’s attorney clarified the venue often held themed events and the image reflected his employment setting rather than personal conduct.

“Presenting these images without their full context appears calculated to invite false and misleading assumptions about Chris’s private life,” Azari said.

She emphasized the irrelevance of the photos to Gallant’s capability to serve and his commitment to remain focused on important voter issues. Gallant’s campaign has continued its focus on earning voter trust as he aims to defeat incumbent Republican Representative Nick LaLota.

Despite long odds, with LaLota having a 70 percent chance of reelection as per Kalshi data, Gallant remains optimistic. His background spans service in the New York Army National Guard and roles such as air traffic controller and firefighter.

Gallant’s campaign stresses his experience in critical decision-making and leadership.

Polling data from January indicated some vulnerability for LaLota, with only 32 percent constituent approval. Additionally, former President Donald Trump’s disapproval could impact LaLota due to 50 percent unfavorable perceptions within the district according to House Majority PAC polling.
