Construction Rig Collapse in Miami’s Brickell Neighborhood

Four individuals required hospitalization on Monday following a construction rig’s collapse in Miami. The incident saw the rig fall onto three vehicles and a construction container, leading to a fire. Miami Fire Rescue tackled the scene in the Brickell area, near Southeast 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive, after the collapse at approximately 8 a.m.

“Miami Fire Rescue responded after a drilling rig fell onto three vehicles near SE 12 Street and Brickell Bay Drive,” stated Miami Fire Rescue in a social media post.

Their Technical Rescue Team successfully freed two workers from a crushed container. Fortunately, all four individuals transported to the hospital were in stable condition.

The two rescued workers, aged 27 and 29, were trapped in the container. A vehicle fire erupted from the incident, which firefighters swiftly managed to extinguish. Miami Fire Chief Robert Hevia highlighted the escape of a BMW driver from a burning car, emphasizing the danger averted.

The rig damaged two other parked vehicles, which were unoccupied at the time. The rig operator, 47, and the BMW driver also received hospital treatment for minor injuries.

All 18 construction workers at the site were accounted for. The scene presented complexity due to the concurrent fire and rescue mission, noted Hevia.

Motorists were advised by the Miami Police Department to avoid the area, given the street closure from SE 12th Street to SE 13th Street. The police urged alternative routes and patience as officials directed traffic.

The cause behind the rig’s fall remains unknown. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is handling the investigation. Reports link the collapse to the construction site of billionaire Ken Griffin’s future Citadel headquarters.

Efforts to obtain comments from Miami Fire Rescue and Citadel were unsuccessful. Further updates await investigation conclusions.
