Lindy Li, a former Democratic fundraiser, recently shared her insights about President Joe Biden’s declining prospects in the 2024 election. According to Li, Vice President Kamala Harris was strategically positioning herself to gain Biden’s donors just before he withdrew from the race while projecting an image of support.
Li described Harris’s efforts as a ‘charade.’ Harris was seeking Biden’s endorsement by instructing her team to avoid any talk of her taking over the nomination. Li stated this in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital.
“It was all a charade,” Li said. “She was auditioning for Biden’s endorsement.”
The period leading to Biden suspending his campaign is detailed in Li’s book, Unburdened. It shows that even close associates of Biden anticipated a halt in his campaign, which came after a poor debate performance.
Li, who worked with both Biden and Harris as a fundraiser, has revealed insider information on how many within the Democratic Party saw signs of Biden’s challenges but chose silence. She also explained how figures like Harris quickly adapted to the changing political landscape.
In her view, Harris focused on face time with potential donors, positioning herself for future opportunities. Li recalled moments when Harris communicated solidarity with Biden while simultaneously appealing to donors who might support her.
“I was on the call,” Li said. “She would host calls with donors and pretend to support Biden.”
Li remembered an instance where Harris spoke to donors two days before Biden’s withdrawal, asserting her support for him. However, Biden officially announced he would step away from reelection on July 21.
Following Biden’s announcement, Li observed Harris quickly moving within Democratic circles to gain support, hinting at having Biden’s approval. In the initial hours, she engaged in a concerted effort to secure backing.
“The first 24 hours were a very intensive charm offensive on her part,” Li noted.
Harris managed to consolidate support rapidly, indicating Biden’s endorsement. Yet, Biden took some time before publicly endorsing her, issuing his support in a second statement shortly after stepping down.
Despite efforts to maintain appearances of backing Biden, some donors remained skeptical. Group chats among donors conveyed frustration and disbelief regarding the situation.
“A lot of us have group chats. And the immediate reaction is what an effing waste of time,” Li shared.
The dissatisfaction among donors stemmed from feelings of deceit and awareness of Biden’s condition.
Representatives for Harris did not immediately comment on Li’s statements.
