Bob Mackie, renowned for his glamorous fashion and costume designs, passed away on Monday at the age of 87. A statement on his official Instagram expressed the deep sorrow of his passing, celebrating his life’s work as a Fashion and Costume Designer, a dream he pursued passionately.
“His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world,” the statement concluded.
Mackie’s legacy includes iconic creations worn by celebrities such as Cher, Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Dolly Parton, and Tina Turner. His career gained momentum when he began designing for Mitzi Gaynor and later, the costumes for “The Carol Burnett Show,” spanning the show’s entire 11-season run.
His notable works include Cher’s feathered outfit at the 1986 Academy Awards. Mackie’s designs often featured sequins, feathers, beads, and theatrical flair, contributing to his status as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable costume designers. His work earned him nine Emmy Awards, a Tony Award for “The Cher Show,” and three Academy Award nominations.
Recently, younger stars have revived his vintage work. Sabrina Carpenter frequently selects Mackie’s archival pieces for significant events. At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, Carpenter appeared in a sparkling silver-and-white Mackie gown, originally crafted for Madonna in 1991.
Before his passing, Mackie noted the renewed interest in his creations by artists like Miley Cyrus and Zendaya. Miley Cyrus showcased a Mackie design at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards in 2024, reflecting the timeless appeal of his work.
