Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace on 25th Anniversary of 9/11

Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, called for a renewed focus on peace as the world marked the 25-year anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the United States. Speaking from his studio window overlooking St. Peter’s Square, he addressed the faithful during his traditional Sunday noon blessing.

He noted, “Two days ago marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States of America.” The pope extended his prayers for those who lost their lives and those who continue to suffer from the tragic events. He emphasized the importance of seeking peace amid global conflict and violence.

In his address, the Chicago-born pope encouraged prayers for global peace. He stated, “At a time when conflict and violence afflict so many of our brothers and sisters, I invite everyone to pray that the Lord will bestow his gift of peace upon the world.” Speaking in Italian, he reiterated the need for prayer to renew our commitment to peace.

On September 11, 2001, before becoming pope, Robert Prevost was in Rome during a major assembly of his Augustinian religious order. At that time, he served as the Chicago provincial leader. On September 14, his birthday, he was elected superior of the entire order, a role he held until 2012.

Vatican News revisited excerpts from his first homily as superior, delivered on September 21, 2001, where he reflected on the attacks. He stated, “We cannot fail to remember the tragic events that shook the United States on September 11.” He pointed to the growing problems of hatred and violence resulting from extreme poverty and various forms of injustice.

Over the years, two popes have visited Ground Zero: Pope Benedict in 2008 and Pope Francis in 2015, demonstrating the ongoing remembrance of the tragic events.
