New York City Council Considers Bill on Press Pass Credentials

The New York City Council is evaluating legislation to simplify the process of revoking press passes from individuals who misuse them.

City Council Speaker Julie Menin, in an interview with FOX 5 New York’s “Good Day New York,” explained, “We are introducing a bill today, sponsored by Councilmember Banks, to address issues with press credentials. Non-journalists are obtaining these passes, which is problematic.”

In May, supporters of Luigi Mangione gained national attention for displaying press passes at a courthouse. This raised questions about the allocation of press credentials.

“F— Brian Thompson,” said Ashley Rojas, referencing the UnitedHealthcare CEO whom Mangione killed in December 2024. Lena Weissbrot, another supporter, alleged Thompson caused more deaths than Usama bin Laden.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani emphasized that these individuals should not have been issued press passes. The council aims to streamline the process for revoking such credentials.

The proposed bill, backed by council members Chris Banks, Carmen De La Rosa, and Inna Vernikov, empowers the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) to suspend or revoke press credentials if there is sufficient evidence. This proposal lowers the current evidence threshold.

Menin, a former MOME commissioner, pointed out the need for credential reforms to ensure legitimate journalists are the recipients.

Luigi Mangione’s recent legal proceedings have involved discussions about media access. His legal team argues that restrictions during his trial are unconstitutional.

Mangione pled guilty to federal charges earlier but is challenging state-level charges, citing double jeopardy.

His criminal actions include the murder of Brian Thompson, documented by surveillance footage catching him fleeing on a bicycle.

Mangione was later apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
