Debate Over Lobster Boat Surveillance and Legal Challenges

1 week ago 0

On September 3, Tobias Russell wrote an opinion piece titled, “Government 24/7 surveillance of lobster boats? That’s going overboard,” which explored Frank Thompson’s legal challenge against a tracking requirement. This case is being heard in federal court.

The Conservation Law Foundation has filed an amicus brief in relation to this case, representing their interests along with Ocean Conservancy’s. The focus is on the mandate for constant surveillance of lobster boats.

A recent photograph taken on July 13 in Portland, Maine, shows fishing aprons hanging inside a lobstering tour boat. This image, captured by Sofia Aldinio for The Washington Post, highlights the maritime context of the issue.
