Chicago Cubs Dominate Pirates as Bullpen Holds

1 week ago 0

The Chicago Cubs faced a challenging bullpen situation, where every pitch came under scrutiny. Cubs fans experienced unease when, in Friday’s series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Konnor Griffin hit a triple and scored off an Oneil Cruz single against Shota Imanaga.

With 27 outs remaining, the Cubs risked extending their four-game losing streak. Catcher Carson Kelly’s swift action in catching Cruz attempting to steal second helped Imanaga find his rhythm. After an extensive review, the call was upheld, allowing Imanaga to settle in.

Imanaga, with help from the Cubs’ offensive surge led by Alex Bregman, allowed the team to overcome the Pirates at Wrigley Field with a 12-2 score. Imanaga expressed gratitude for Kelly’s play, stating, “If he hadn’t done that, the game could have spiraled.” Imanaga stayed composed through challenging frames, preventing any additional runs.

The Cubs’ offense awakened, scoring 15 runs over their losing streak at an average of 3.8 per game. They scored three times in the second inning, highlighted by Kelly’s two-out double. Alex Bregman hit a significant two-run home run in a four-run frame.

Bregman finished with three hits, continuing his impressive second-half performance. His home run marked the 25th of the season, with consistency matching his career stats, including an average OPS of .803 over previous seasons. Bregman’s focus on mechanics contributed to his improved performance.

Bregman stated, “I think like June, I decided not to care about my numbers but to focus on mechanics.” His improved play complements Pete Crow-Armstrong’s remarkable season, enhancing the Cubs’ lineup potential.

Bregman believes the Cubs’ offense can be the best in baseball, evident from their consistent performances, including 16 hits that game.

The Cubs now trail the Phillies by half a game for the top National League wild-card spot. Bregman commented on Kelly’s crucial play, “That’s massive, stopping the bleeding when we need it and continuing when it’s going well.”

Injury updates are crucial for the Cubs’ roster management. Manager Craig Counsell detailed a timeline for various players returning from injuries.

Dansby Swanson progresses with a left oblique injury, having on-field workouts and a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa soon. The plan is for him to be active in Cincinnati.

Meanwhile, Happ exited Friday’s game due to right toe discomfort, and the Cubs played it safe with Happ given their substantial lead.

The Cubs evaluate whether right-hander Edward Cabrera returns following relief appearances. Shelby Miller is also nearing return post elbow surgery, with precautions during rehab. Justin Steele recovers from elbow surgery with potential for more major-league appearances.

Phil Maton underwent a knee procedure, following a two-year deal with the Cubs.

Reporter Andy Martinez provided insights from the Chicago Tribune.
