Iowa Governor’s Race: Rob Sand Leads in New Polls

1 week ago 0

Democrat Rob Sand Leads Republican Zach Lahn

Democrat Rob Sand holds a 10-point lead over Republican Zach Lahn in the latest poll among likely voters in Iowa’s governor race. This comes in a state where Donald Trump secured victories in three previous presidential elections.

The state’s rightward shift over the last decade hasn’t deterred Democrats, who see potential for success in the upcoming election. Sand, currently Iowa’s state auditor, maintains a steady polling advantage over Lahn, a businessman, prompting election analysts to adjust the race prediction in favor of Democrats recently.

Iowa once supported Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012, but shifted to Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024, with a 13-point advantage for Trump in the last election. This trend indicates the state’s move away from closely contested races.

Sand’s campaign will test whether Democrats can regain traction in Iowa, especially with white, working-class voters who previously chose Obama before turning to Trump.

Poll Details

In the latest survey, Sand’s lead stands at 51% compared to Lahn’s 41% among likely voters. Among all registered voters, the lead is slightly wider, with Sand at 50% and Lahn at 39%.

Sand’s support comes from some voters who previously backed Trump in 2024, along with strong backing from Democrats. He secured 97% of votes from those who supported Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, with just 1% siding with Lahn. Among Trump supporters, Sand garnered 12% to Lahn’s 73%.

Motivation to vote appears high among Harris voters, with 94% expressing certainty in voting, compared to 90% of Trump supporters.

President’s Popularity in Iowa

Despite Trump’s previous wins in the state, his unpopularity persists. According to the poll, 41% of respondents approve of Trump, while 57% disapprove.

The poll included 2,169 registered voters, with 2,043 identified as “strict” likely voters. It was conducted from September 3-8 and carries a margin of error of ±3.5% for registered voters.

Lahn Campaign’s Response

The composition of the poll sample included 38% of respondents holding at least a bachelor’s degree, above the 31% figure for the broader population based on U.S. Census data.

Lahn’s campaign questioned the poll’s reliability, attributing the results to raised spending by Sand and labeling his policies as radically liberal.

Other Polls Indicate Sand’s Lead

Emerson College’s recent poll shows Sand with a narrower 3-point lead. Suffolk University reported a 4-point lead for Sand. Meanwhile, The New York Times and Siena University’s findings show a slim 1-point lead.

Fox News poll results indicate a 9-point advantage for Sand, giving him 53% compared to Lahn’s 44%.

Prediction Markets and Trend Analysis

Prediction markets show an optimistic outlook for Sand, projecting a 78% chance of victory on Kalshi and 77% on Polymarket.

These markets reflect betting sentiments but should not be considered foolproof predictions.

Democratic Hopes in 2026

Iowa, traditionally a battleground, became more Republican-leaning during Trump’s tenure. However, Democrats see potential gains due to falling national approval rates for Trump and a mix of economic concerns and policy repercussions from tariffs affecting local farmers.

Democrats aim not only for the governor’s seat but also the U.S. Senate race, marked by GOP Senator Joni Ernst’s decision against reelection.

Rob Sand’s Independent Stance

Sand positions himself apart from some Democratic stances on cultural issues, diverging on topics like transgender athletes in sports, while supporting reproductive and marriage rights.

This approach addresses Iowa’s varied political climate, reflected in low favorability ratings for both parties in local polls.

Outlook for the Election

The gubernatorial race is anticipated to be highly competitive. Forecasts from Cook Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball mark it as leaning Democratic, suggesting Sand maintains a slight edge.
