WWII-Era Plane Crash at Pennsylvania Airport

A World War II-era aircraft crashed during a landing attempt at a Pennsylvania airport on Wednesday evening. The incident trapped the pilot inside the overturned plane, prompting swift rescue efforts from police and an airport employee.

Limerick Township police arrived at Heritage Field Airport at 7:17 p.m., discovering the small aircraft flipped upside down on the runway. The pilot, the sole occupant, was stuck inside the wreckage.

Authorities informed that both a police officer and an airport employee successfully liberated the pilot from his parachute and pulled him out of the plane.

Reports indicated the pilot was trapped inside, but he was being pulled out upon our arrival. No further intervention was required from the fire department, Limerick Township Fire Chief Ken Shuler stated to FOX29 Philadelphia.

The pilot, conscious and able to stand, had visible cuts, according to police reports. Freedom Valley Medical Rescue provided initial treatment at the scene before the pilot was transported to Reading Trauma Center. He remained alert and communicative following the crash. However, no additional information regarding his condition was available.

The plane, a single-engine model, had departed from Pottstown and was en route to Quakertown. As reported by the station, citing local officials, the aircraft had been airborne for approximately nine minutes.

The crash resulted in a fuel spill. Firefighters stayed on-site to manage the leak and monitored for potential fires.

Previously known as Pottstown Municipal Airport, Heritage Field Airport accommodates private and recreational aviation. The airport remained closed Wednesday night during operations to contain the fuel spill and remove the aircraft.

The reasons behind the crash were not immediately clear, prompting police to contact the Federal Aviation Administration’s Eastern Region Operations Center for further investigation. Aviation authorities are looking into the matter.
