New Documentary Challenges Perceptions of Canada

A new documentary titled “Broken Country” questions the view of Canada as a progressive model for the United States. Directed by Canadian filmmaker Mira Metter and co-produced by Mike Werry, the film investigates issues related to healthcare, affordability, drug policy, immigration, crime, and government spending. Filmmakers traveled across Canada, interviewing over 4,500 Canadians and more than 70 policy experts.

Healthcare Challenges

The film highlights personal stories such as that of a man who suffered a spinal injury and waited 15 hours before seeing a surgeon. His doctor later informed him that earlier surgery could have led to a full recovery. Now, he endures chronic pain and was offered Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) while seeking treatment, highlighting patient struggles with the healthcare system.

Canada’s MAID law, legalized in 2016, accounts for one in every 20 deaths in the country, according to the BBC.

Other Concerns Addressed in the Film

The documentary also explores immigration pressures. Mira Metter notes that recent policies have increased temporary migrants, students, and workers without providing adequate resources. With an influx of people in cities like Toronto, the infrastructure struggles to keep pace.

Drug Policy

The film critiques Canada’s drug policy that focuses on safe injection sites, similar to practices in parts of the United States. Controversy arose when an Ontario high school distributed safe snorting kits to students.

General Struggles

Metter emphasizes that Canadians across political lines face common hardships. Questions like “Can you afford a home?” and “Are you living paycheck to paycheck?” reveal widespread struggles, regardless of political stances.

“Broken Country” will have a limited theater release on September 18 in Canada and the U.S., with availability on Amazon Prime starting October 26.
