Colorado Judge Raises Bond for Murder Suspect Barry Morphew

A Colorado judge has set a higher bond for murder suspect Barry Morphew, increasing it from $3 million to $10 million cash only. Morphew was apprehended on September 3 in unincorporated Boulder County due to an Alamosa County warrant for non-compliance. Details from the Boulder County Sheriff indicated deputies arrested him at 9:11 p.m. without incident, booking him at Boulder County Jail shortly thereafter.

Prosecutors filed for a warrant and bond modification just hours prior to his arrest. The judge approved this request on September 3, issuing a bench warrant and stating bond conditions at $3 million cash only, with provisions for nationwide extradition.

Morphew arrived at the bond hearing in Alamosa in chains, wearing a white and orange striped outfit. After the hearing, where bond was increased to $10 million, deputies escorted him out.

Prosecutors revealed GPS data showing Morphew left home under a work exception, later heading to Denver International Airport on August 26. Despite claims from his attorneys that he might have gone there to pick up his daughter, prosecutors argued this violated his bond conditions.

The GPS evidence showed Morphew’s movements from his home to the airport close to 10 a.m., arriving by 11:45 a.m., before leaving shortly after. On the same Denver trip, Morphew visited several locations, including a steakhouse, Whole Foods, and a liquor store. His GPS data later tracked him near hotels and a mall in Denver.

Reports from CBS Colorado detail a hit-and-run incident involving Morphew near East 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Video footage captured Morphew, identified by the judge, engaging in the collision, refusing to provide identification, offering cash, and subsequently leaving the scene.

Prosecutors reviewed his GPS data from this day as part of investigating potential violations of his release terms.

Morphew is awaiting trial for first-degree murder linked to the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. He maintains his innocence and denies involvement in her death.
