Residents of Kauai, a Hawaiian island, faced the imminent approach of Hurricane Lowell during a holiday weekend, while striving to maintain their planned activities. As the storm moved closer, Kauai’s annual marathon was canceled, yet some continued with their holiday schedule.
Kauai prepared for potential heavy rainfall and strong winds, with Lowell classified as a Category 3 storm by late Sunday. Forecasts indicated it could pass near the Hawaiian Islands by Monday evening, bringing two to 10 inches of rain statewide. Some areas in Kauai and Hawaii’s Big Island might experience up to 14 inches.
Despite the looming storm, Lehua Lanning proceeded with her baby shower for her first child, a girl expected soon. The event took place as planned on Saturday evening at a beachside park’s open-air pavilion on Kauai’s east side. Approximately 100 guests enjoyed local cuisine like kalua pig, smoked meat, ribs, and rice to the sound of reggae music.
“It was either now or never,” Ms. Lanning, 21, commented, emphasizing her concern about the baby arriving amid the storm.
Rain began to fall on Sunday afternoon. Kauai officials urged residents to remain indoors as conditions were expected to worsen.
