Rob Lowe Reflects on Career and Rivalry with Tom Cruise

Rob Lowe faced fierce competition during his acting career in the 1980s and ’90s. One recurring rival for coveted roles was Tom Cruise. Lowe mentioned, “That dastardly Tom Cruise was always a nemesis.” He recalled seeing scripts like ‘Jerry Maguire’ and ‘Top Gun’, only to find out Cruise was attached to these major projects.

Lowe often lost major roles to Cruise, including in hit films like ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Jerry Maguire.’

Despite these setbacks, Lowe thrived as a key member of the Brat Pack. He made a mark with films such as ‘St. Elmo’s Fire,’ ‘The Outsiders,’ ‘Class,’ and ‘Oxford Blues.’ Yet, he never secured a role in a John Hughes movie, a notable gap in his career. Lowe expressed regret over missing out on ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,’ a role Hughes did not consider him for, instead casting Matthew Broderick.

Lowe remarked, “John Hughes never got what I was selling.” Meeting Hughes once, Lowe saw many parts he could have taken. But he never received the call for Hughes’s movies.

Lowe reflected on missed opportunities in John Hughes’ films, such as “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “The Breakfast Club.”

Lowe speculated that his pre-existing fame might have influenced Hughes’s decisions. “I have a theory … I was actually already too well known,” he reasoned. Hughes often chose less-known actors and helped launch their careers, adding, “At least that’s what I tell myself to make myself feel better for not getting a role in ‘The Breakfast Club.'”

In later years, Lowe built a successful career with roles in television and film. ‘The West Wing’ gave him a significant career boost as Sam Seaborn, earning nominations for both Emmy and Golden Globe awards. He later showcased comedic talents as Chris Traeger on ‘Parks and Recreation.’ These roles solidified his status in the industry.
