Record-Breaking Enrollment at Lake Forest College

Lake Forest College’s 107-acre campus has become busier this fall. It is due to welcoming the largest first-year class in its 169-year history. The student body has grown to 1,794, including 423 first-year students and 116 transfer students. Last fall saw 394 freshmen and 89 transfers, while in 2024, there were 422 freshmen and 92 transfers.

The Secret is Out, stated College President Michael J. Sosulski, emphasizing the increased visibility of Lake Forest College. He noted that the rise in application numbers and better acceptance rates reflect the institution’s growing appeal.

Factors Contributing to Growth

Sosulski highlighted several important aspects attracting students:

• Location near Lake Michigan and close to Chicago
• Affordability and favorable post-graduate outcomes
• Within six months of graduation, 97% of students gain employment or attend graduate school
• Graduation rate of 70% in four years, with a median salary of $51,324 six years post-graduation

Sosulski mentioned that this success partly stems from knowing students personally, allowing the college to support and recommend them effectively. This quality was recognized by The Princeton Review, ranking Lake Forest College as 14th best in career services.

Transfer and International Students

Lake Forest College actively seeks transfer students, being transfer-friendly. They have focused on partnerships with the College of Lake County and the College of DuPage. Sosulski explained that these agreements facilitate the transfer of credits, simplifying the process for incoming students.

Sosulski added that 45% of students are from out of state, with representation from 44 states and 20% of the student body being international, coming from 119 countries. He described the classroom environment as vibrant with diverse perspectives.

Excellence in Sports and Academics

Lake Forest College boasts strong Division III sports programs. The women’s soccer team recently went undefeated in their conference, finishing with a 21-1 record. The college’s athletics appeal, combined with diverse academic offerings, contributes to recruitment success.

Popular majors include economics, business, and finance, alongside new additions such as neuroscience and artificial intelligence, drawing students interested in cutting-edge fields. The health professions program offers career pathways in healthcare in partnership with Rosalind Franklin University Medical School.

Student-Focused Approach

The college prides itself on fostering a community where everyone is recognized. Sosulski mentioned the 13-to-1 faculty-to-student ratio supports a personal education experience. Programs such as the “In the Loop” internship provide downtown opportunities, enhancing student learning.

While Sosulski did not forecast continuous record-breaking enrollments, he expects positive trends in applications. The college continues to gain attention for offering a quality education at an affordable rate.
