Greek Air Force Jet Crash at Air Show Results in Tragic Loss

A tragic event unfolded during an air show north of Athens on Saturday, as a Greek air force jet crashed, leading to the deaths of both pilots. The crash occurred at Tanagra air force base and was witnessed by thousands of spectators.

The Phantom F4 jet, a twin-seat aircraft, crashed during a low-altitude maneuver, plummeting near the ground. Spectators observed smoke billowing as the jet burst into flames upon impact, sending a large cloud of black smoke into the sky. No civilians were injured in the incident.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed, “The sense of grief is widespread, and our thoughts are with the families of the two pilots we lost. It is a reminder of the daily danger faced by Greece’s aviators, who remain on constant standby to protect Greece’s skies.”

In response to the fire caused by the crash, 11 water-dropping planes and helicopters were deployed alongside 85 firefighters to extinguish the blaze. Video footage showed a second fireball near the crash site as the aircraft broke apart. The bodies of the pilots were eventually recovered.

An eyewitness recounted to ERT, Greece’s state-owned broadcaster, “We were all stunned. It hadn’t been airborne for more than three minutes.” The accident led to the cancellation of the annual Athens Flying Week events, and the area was swiftly evacuated.

Cyprus’ Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas expressed his condolences: “It is with deep sadness that I learned of the death of the two officers of the Hellenic Air Force, who lost their lives in the tragic accident that occurred during the air show at Tanagra Air Base.” He also noted contacting Nikos Dendias, Greece’s Minister of National Defense, regarding the incident.

The Greek air force has announced three days of mourning to honor the fallen aviators.

Similar tragedies have occurred in recent times, including an air show in May in Idaho where two jets collided, although the pilots were able to safely eject.
