Tennessee Honors Dolly Parton at Volunteers’ Season Opener

The passing of Dolly Parton, the iconic figure of country music, cinema, and more, touched many deeply. Her influence was especially felt in Tennessee, her home state. On the opening day of the Tennessee Volunteers’ 2026 football season, a heartfelt tribute took place at Neyland Stadium.

Special Tribute on Helmets

Before the game, the team announced a tribute to Parton: an orange butterfly decal on each player’s helmet showcasing her name. Head coach Josh Heupel shared that this decal will remain throughout the season. Heupel highlighted Parton’s global influence and her deep connection to East Tennessee, reflecting on her contributions and pride in her heritage.

“A lady that was extremely proud of her roots,” said Heupel.

The Volunteers faced the Furman Paladins that day. In one of the most moving tributes, 102,000 fans sang Parton’s classic “I Will Always Love You” together, creating an unforgettable moment. It captured the emotion and reverence the crowd held for her.

A New Tradition

Additionally, the Vols shifted their traditional fourth-quarter song to Parton’s “My Tennessee Mountain Home,” replacing Morgan Wallen’s “The Way I Talk.” This change signifies the deep respect for Parton and might evolve into a regular tradition, showcasing her profound impact on Tennessee.
