Rabies Warnings Rise Across U.S. States Due to Infected Animals

Health officials from multiple states have issued warnings about rabies exposure after detecting infected bats, raccoons, foxes, goats, and a pet dog this year. These concerns are particularly pronounced in Idaho and Texas.

Rabies Increase in Idaho

Idaho has reported 24 rabid bats this year, surpassing numbers from the previous three years. One public health district has reported more than twice as many possible bat exposure calls as last year. In Blaine County, south of Stanley, a rabid bat was confirmed in mid-July. The rising number of encounters is attributed to Idaho’s growing population and possibly changing animal movement due to wildfire smoke.

Bats are the only animals in Idaho that naturally carry rabies, with about 1 in 100 bats infected. Residents are advised not to touch bats with bare hands and should contact local health officials if direct contact with a bat occurs.

Texas Reports Rabies in Pet Dog

San Antonio experienced a rabies case in a pet dog after an encounter with a skunk in late July. The dog displayed symptoms and was confirmed to have rabies by mid-August. Officials stressed the need to report wildlife encounters and keep pets vaccinated and supervised.

Rabid Fox in Alabama

Alabama issued warnings after a fox tested positive for rabies near Billingsley junction in Autauga County. The fox was euthanized, and though no humans were exposed, two dogs may have had contact. Residents are reminded to vaccinate pets and avoid interactions with wildlife acting abnormally.

Investigations in North Carolina

Rabies exposures linked to goats from a Mobile Petting Zoo were investigated by North Carolina health officials. Goats were exposed by a skunk, attended events in several counties, and potential contacts are advised to seek medical advice. Transmission from livestock poses a lower risk yet remains serious.

Florida’s Rabies Alert

In Brevard County, a rabies alert was announced after a raccoon tested positive. The alert covers a specified area and advises residents to avoid contact with wildlife and ensure pets are vaccinated and supervised.

Multiple Alerts in Maryland

Rabies alerts across Maryland counties were issued following positive tests of raccoons and bats. Residents who may have touched infected animals are urged to contact health officials, particularly concerning children and pets.

Rabies Cases in Michigan

Saginaw County announced a positive rabies case in a bat. Michigan has recorded 48 rabies cases among animals this year, mostly bats. Advice is provided on safely dealing with bats found indoors.

Warning in California’s Yosemite Park

Yosemite National Park issued a warning about a dead rabid bat found in Curry Village, urging potential direct contact cases to seek immediate healthcare. It highlights ongoing testing as part of rabies monitoring.
