Lake Ontario Renaming Effort Faces Opposition in New York

A port city in New York, located on the shores of Lake Ontario, which lies within a county that supported Donald Trump in the 2024 election, has rejected the president’s initiative to rename the body of water to “Lake America.”

Following failed trade negotiations with Canada, Trump announced that the U.S. was “seriously considering” a name change, citing reduced business expectations with Ontario. Last week, he signed an executive order instructing the Interior Department to update the lake’s name in the U.S. geographic naming system.

Polls reveal that a majority of Americans oppose altering the lake’s centuries-old name. Likewise, Oswego County in New York, which Trump won with 62 percent of the vote, appears to be against the plan. Many city lawmakers and residents have voiced their frustration.

Oswego’s Mayor, Robert Corradino, a Republican, issued a statement expressing the city government’s dissent to Trump’s executive order. He emphasized the historical significance and shared identity embedded in the current name of Lake Ontario.

“Lake Ontario has carried its name for hundreds of years,” the statement declared. “It is a name rooted in history, geography, and the shared identity of the communities that surround it.”

Additionally, the Oswego County Legislature, encompassing both Republicans and Democrats, advanced a resolution opposing the “Lake America” change. The resolution highlighted the lake’s historical and geographical importance, as well as the substantial costs involved for taxpayers and businesses.
