Jewish Community Shows Support for Mark Ruffalo Amid Antisemitism Allegations

Over 180 Jewish entertainers and artists expressed their support for actor Mark Ruffalo in a letter released on Tuesday, addressing accusations of antisemitism related to his opposition to the proposed merger between Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount. The letter emphatically countered criticism against Ruffalo, stating, ‘Enough with the false and dangerous weaponization of charges of antisemitism against those who are brave enough to point out the obvious: that the assault on the Palestinian people and the assault on our liberties at home are deeply interconnected, and there is nothing antisemitic about recognizing that fact,’ according to Variety.

Previous allegations arose after Ruffalo shared a video featuring Safra Catz, an Oracle executive vice chair and Paramount board member, discussing technology used to assist Israel post-Hamas attacks on October 7. Ruffalo linked Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison to financing behind the proposed acquisition, insinuating that it would facilitate media consolidation and oppression.

The letter was signed by notable artists such as Abbi Jacobson, Alex Winter, Gina Gershon, Ilana Glazer, James Schamus, Joel Coen, Larry Charles, Kate Berlant, Naomi Klein, Sarah Sherman, Jane Schoenbrun, Todd Haynes, and Tony Kushner. They asserted that executives have possible ties to support ‘ongoing depredations’ against people in Palestine and efforts to silence critics of those actions.

Celebrities also pointed out that many American Jews now view Israel’s actions against Gaza as war crimes, with some labeling it as genocide. They demanded an end to unfounded antisemitism charges against critics like Ruffalo, contending, ‘Pointing out the crucial connections between what is happening in Gaza and what is happening in Hollywood is the exact opposite of antisemitism. It is, for us, the very essence of Jewish ethical duty.’

Fox News Digital sought comment from Ruffalo’s representatives. Ruffalo responded earlier to accusations, rejecting claims of antisemitism by stating, ‘Criticizing the actions of the Israeli prime minister, a military technology contract or the executives who supply it is not the same as criticizing Jewish people.’

Meanwhile, Ruffalo faces backlash from The Brigade, consisting of nearly 1,000 industry insiders who condemned him, stating, ‘This is not commentary on a merger. It is not a criticism of a government. It is simple antisemitism, where Jewish executives are portrayed as a secretive and powerful wealth-hoarding elite delighting in mass death.’

Elizabeth Barcohana from the California Republican Party’s Jewish engagement chair expressed her views to Fox News Digital, highlighting Ruffalo’s prominence in opposition as indicative of Hollywood’s liberal activism. She praised The Brigade for challenging Ruffalo’s stance, stating, ‘Ruffalo as an anti-merger spokesman is an odd choice given his extremist rhetoric that has completely discredited him with rational people.’
