Senator Ed Markey successfully defended his seat against Representative Seth Moulton in the Democratic primary for Massachusetts’ Senate race. Despite a trend of younger challengers attempting to unseat established incumbents, Markey managed to secure the win.

Progressives’ Role in Markey’s Victory

While some progressives have advocated for new leadership, the same group has often supported older politicians who align with their policy goals. This was evident as Markey received backing from younger and progressive Democrats who prioritized his ideological stance over his age.

The primary election saw Markey achieve roughly 69 percent of the vote, with Moulton garnering about 31 percent, according to the Associated Press.

Policy vs. Age in Progressive Politics

Adam Carlson, partner at Zenith Research, explained that policy often outweighs age for progressive voters. They prioritize leaders like Markey and Bernie Sanders, who are seen as fighters for their causes.

“It can’t be the only thing. Just trading in for a younger model doesn’t work. Voters care about what you believe in,” Carlson noted.

Todd Belt from The George Washington University echoed that sentiment, saying progressive voters seek leaders aligned with their issues rather than merely focusing on age.

The Age Factor in Politics

Markey’s age was highlighted during the campaign, but his personal popularity remained strong. A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll showed that many voters described Markey as “old,” yet they favored his job performance overall.

Seth Moulton attempted to position himself as a candidate better equipped to address current challenges because of his youth, but his moderate stance didn’t resonate as strongly with the progressive base.

Continued Support for Progressive Stalwarts

Sanders, Warren, and Markey remain influential figures in progressive politics. Despite calls for generational change, these leaders maintain significant support due to their policy positions.

Sanders mentioned potential successors such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others, emphasizing the importance of focusing on policy rather than individual personalities.

The progressive movement faces ongoing challenges with aging leadership. Future elections could see shifts, especially if more moderate candidates gain traction.
