On August 4, German authorities discovered a drone carrying an explosive device near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. According to Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, forensic analyses and intelligence tied the operation to Russia. The explosive, however, failed to detonate due to a faulty detonator. Additionally, there is suspicion of another drone crashing into a nearby cargo plane, suggesting Russia’s continued involvement in hybrid operations in Europe.

German Government’s Response

Following these revelations, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced the closure of Russia’s consulate in Bonn and the termination of the contract for the Russian House cultural center in Berlin. Tighter entry restrictions for Russian nationals are now in place. Further measures target Russia’s shadow fleet, increasing the pressure on diplomatic relations between the two countries.

International Reactions

In support of Germany, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte expressed full solidarity with Germany’s findings. European leaders like European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk have criticized Russia, with the European Union preparing further sanctions.
