A Reno swim instructor experienced a startling encounter with an otter while swimming in Lake Tahoe. This unusual incident occurred over the weekend and resulted in an emergency room visit.

A Long Time Swimmer in Lake Tahoe

Lynnette Bellin, a seasoned swimmer of 25 years in Lake Tahoe, shared her disbelief and surprise. She was unaware otters inhabited the lake until her swim, approximately 30 minutes into her route on Sunday. Bellin’s swim route is a familiar path she has followed every Sunday since July, according to the Reno Gazette Journal.

The Attack Experience

Bellin initially mistook the otter’s strength for a person tugging at her in the water. She shared her confusion with the outlet on Monday. As Bellin realized the truth, she felt the otter’s teeth and claws aggressively engaging her. She attempted to repel the otter by picking it up and throwing it, only to face more ferocity.

She cried out for help, but nearby people on the bike trail were unable to hear her. Eventually, she reached slippery rocks, attempting to escape as the otter persisted. Bellin finally found refuge on a larger rock, where she managed to distance herself from the aggressive animal.

Despite reaching safety, Bellin’s ordeal continued as she traversed over a fence to the bike trail. She walked back to her starting point barefoot and covered in blood.

Medical Attention and Recovery

Once help arrived, police and firefighters took her to safety. Bellin drove herself to the hospital, receiving 38 stitches and rabies shots. The experience left her shaken as she described Lake Tahoe as her sanctuary now tarnished by the attack.
