A husband accused of raping and sexually abusing his wife is set to face trial in England on Tuesday. This case involves a dozen other men alleged to have participated in or facilitated the abuse. The accused, in his 60s from Stockport in northwest England, faces accusations of conspiring with others to drug and rape his wife while she was unconscious. British police authorities reported this in June. The trial is taking place in Manchester.
Under U.K. law, the man’s identity is protected to maintain his wife’s anonymity, who is the alleged victim. He is charged with 48 offenses. Initially, he denied all charges, but later admitted to 15. These include five counts of rape, three of sexual assault, six of assault by penetration, and one of sharing intimate images, as stated by Greater Manchester police.
He still denies 11 counts of rape, two of attempted rape, seven of assault by penetration, four of sexual assault, four of conspiracy to rape, and other serious charges, according to the U.K’s Crown Prosecution Service.
The other men standing trial on Tuesday are accused of a variety of offenses. These range from sexually abusing the victim to helping administer substances to render her unconscious, thereby facilitating the abuse. Prosecutors mentioned that the ages of the accused men range from 28 to 73.
This case has drawn comparisons to the trial of Gisèle Pelicot, a French woman who gained international attention when she testified against her ex-husband and 51 other men in a mass rape trial in 2024. Pelicot chose to waive her right to anonymity and demanded public court proceedings during the four-month trial against her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot. All defendants were found guilty, with Dominique receiving the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
