Architectural Milestones in Chicago

On September 1, 1982, the State of Illinois Center reached a construction milestone. The building, which cost over $172 million, was the most expensive structure in the state at the time. A “topping out” ceremony was held with notable attendees such as architect Helmut Jahn, Governor Jim Thompson, and Mayor Jane Byrne. Archbishop Joseph Bernardin from the Archdiocese of Chicago also blessed the building.

The building, later renamed the Thompson Center, saw Thompson as its first tenant in 1984. The office featured a historic desk from the Chicago Historical Society, once owned by George Pullman. For security reasons, bulletproof glass was installed around Thompson’s office space.

Changes in Chicago’s Urban Structure

The adoption of Chicago’s grid system occurred in 1909. State and Madison streets formed the city’s baseline, organizing addresses into a logical sequence. This system was extended to many suburbs over time and used Edward Brennan’s 1901 suggestion, allowing effective navigation with directional signals such as N, S, E, W.

Historic Weather Data

Weather records reflect significant changes over the years. The high temperature reached 101 degrees in 1953, while a low of 45 degrees was recorded in 1949. In 1977, Chicago experienced a precipitation record of 2.92 inches on this date.

Sports and Chicago Bears

In September 1933, the Chicago Bears football team conducted their inaugural training camp outside the city. The team trained at the University of Notre Dame, a notable event for the time.

Tragic and Transformative Events

September 1, 1961, marked a tragic event when a TWA Constellation plane crashed soon after takeoff from Midway Airport. The crash was caused by a loose bolt that led to the tail section’s failure. Unfortunately, all 78 people aboard perished in the accident.

The city mandated smoke detectors in multi-unit dwellings in 1984. This ordinance aimed at reducing fire fatalities and was enforced with fines or imprisonment for non-compliance. Commissioner Louis Galante noted that most fire deaths in 1983 occurred in homes without smoke detectors.

Fox Lake police officer Charles Joseph Gliniewicz’s death in 2015 appeared as a homicide, but was later revealed to be a staged suicide linked to his financial misconduct.

Space Milestones

In 1992, Mae Jemison, raised in Chicago, became the first Black woman to travel to space. She participated in the STS-47 Spacelab J mission aboard the space shuttle Endeavour.

Key Trades and Transactions

In 2018, the Chicago Bears made a significant move by trading for Khalil Mack. They acquired the notable edge rusher from the Oakland Raiders, involving several draft picks, and signed him to a major contract extension. Mack played for the Bears until 2022 before being traded to the Los Angeles Chargers.
