Flash Floods in Grand Canyon Result in Tragedy and Rescue Efforts

Flash floods in the Grand Canyon over the weekend claimed the life of a Texas hiker and left at least two others presumed dead. The family of Dr. John Giusti, a 46-year-old chiropractor from Granbury, Texas, confirmed his death. Two of his friends, Brent Rosenkranz and Timothy Allen Smith, remain missing.

Dr. Giusti, described by his family as a dedicated father and healer, had ventured into the canyon with Rosenkranz and Smith. His wife, Janet Giusti, stated, “To the community, he was a gifted healer. To his daughters, he was their ultimate hero.”

Rosenkranz, who has a wife and three sons, is known for his dedication to martial arts, having impacted many young students as an ATA instructor. Smith, a husband and father of three, is passionate about the outdoors, often hiking and camping with his family.

The trio entered the Grand Canyon last Friday, planning to explore near Bright Angel Campground and later visit Havasupai Gardens. The sudden onset of heavy rains caused flash flooding, complicating their plans and stranding them.

Rescue operations have been hindered by ongoing rain. The Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) rescued 61 people over the weekend but faced challenges in locating the missing. Limited cellphone coverage and language barriers, given that some missing individuals are foreign tourists, intensified the difficulties in contacting authorities.

Due to the remoteness of the terrain, the only access methods are by foot, mule, or helicopter. During the rains, park rangers evacuated hikers. Among them were Erica Viola and her boyfriend, who narrowly escaped floodwaters. Viola reported her boyfriend urging her to run, saving them by minutes before the collapse of a footbridge.

Floods also destroyed infrastructure, including footbridges along Bright Angel Creek. The National Park Service confirmed these losses, which complicate pedestrian access in the park.

Despite the challenges, search and rescue teams continue their efforts amid ongoing weather concerns. The families of the missing expressed profound gratitude to those involved in the rescue attempts and requested continued prayers and support.
