Severe Flooding in Grand Canyon Causes Water Restrictions and Search Efforts

Severe flash flooding disrupted a central water line in the Grand Canyon over the weekend. The National Park Service (NPS) implemented strict water use restrictions while searching for missing hikers. Extensive damage to infrastructure, including the Transcanyon Waterline, forced stage four water restrictions starting Monday afternoon.

The flooding incident left one person dead and an estimated 15 others missing. The body of a 46-year-old man was found in the Colorado River, though his identity remains undisclosed.

The NPS urges anyone with information on hikers or backpackers in the affected area, particularly along the Bright Angel Creek corridor and nearby campgrounds on August 29, to contact their Investigative Services Branch.

The park has so far evacuated at least 62 people since the flooding began. Stage 4 water restrictions include dry camping, temporary closure of lodgings, and a no-fire rule for parts of the park.

The flooding impacted the Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area. Most footbridges over Bright Angel Creek were destroyed. Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs stated that state emergency officials are coordinating with federal and local authorities in the search efforts.

“My heart is with the families and loved ones of every person unaccounted for,” Hobbs stated, emphasizing that coordination is ongoing with multiple agencies to support search and recovery efforts.

Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes described the flooding as “devastating,” expressing gratitude to first responders. The damage included a historic lodge and caused environmental disruption.
