Dana Brown Discusses His Dismissal and Tenure as Astros GM

Recently dismissed GM Dana Brown shared his thoughts on his departure from the Houston Astros during his first comments since leaving the team. Brown expressed appreciation for Astros’ owner Jim Crane for giving him the opportunity in his first general manager role.

Brown attributed his removal to frustration over the team’s recent performance, although Crane stated that the team’s 3-6 performance in their homestand was not a factor. The Astros’ loss of six out of nine games against the Mariners, Angels, and Athletics, all of whom have losing records, aligned with a period of contention for the American League West title.

“We go in and we lose six of the nine,” Brown said on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM. “So we go 3-6 and we’re tied, but we have the tiebreaker, so we’re still in first place. And I just think the frustration mounted and it boiled over and that was the end of it.”

The announcement of Brown’s dismissal followed soon after. Despite Crane’s assertion that a change was necessary, he insisted that the homestand’s outcome did not influence the decision. Brown accepted this and continued to praise Crane for providing him the unique opportunity, also noting his status as only the seventh Black GM in MLB history.

Brown refuted claims that Crane micromanaged baseball operations during his tenure, affirming that he had freedom in running the club, although some decisions needed ownership’s consent. He defended controversial moves like trading for Mike Burrows and signing Japanese pitcher Tatsuya Imai, stating his belief in their future success and implying that quicker development might have shifted the Astros’ standing.

Brown acknowledged challenges that came with his role. The Astros had experienced a period of immense success, but the roster was undergoing changes with aging veterans and key players leaving through free agency. Brown remains committed to the team emotionally, stating, “My heart and soul’s still in it. So I’m pulling for the Astros and the city and Jim Crane and the ownership.”
