Cowboys Sign Von Miller, Release Sam Williams

The Dallas Cowboys showed their intent to strengthen their defensive line early in the offseason by exploring the possibility of acquiring Maxx Crosby. With the need for a veteran defensive end after trading Micah Parsons last year, the Cowboys signed Von Miller. Miller’s one-year contract with Dallas is valued at up to $7.5 million.

According to Todd Archer of ESPN, the acquisition of Von Miller was a contributing factor to the release of Sam Williams. Williams, a veteran edge rusher, was signed to a one-year deal with $2 million guaranteed as recently as March. Archer shared on X that Miller’s addition reduced the availability of an edge rusher spot on the 53-man roster.

In his tenure with the Cowboys, Williams recorded 85 tackles, forced three fumbles, made 22 tackles for loss, and achieved 9.5 sacks. His participation in the 2025 season included appearances in all 17 games, where he started five times.

“I took all the reports, all the negative comments, everything,” Williams expressed in a statement on KLTV.com. “And I took it in and I looked at myself in the mirror because you can’t get better unless you know what you’re doing wrong. So everything that I’ve seen, I try to fix.”

Williams reflected on the pressure he faced during training camp to secure a spot on the roster. Despite the challenges, he noted his commitment to improvement.

There is uncertainty about whether other teams will show interest in Williams as they prepare for the start of the regular season. His best season was in 2023 when he recorded 26 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Unfortunately, he missed the entire 2024 season due to a torn ACL and partially torn MCL suffered during training camp.
