The Chicago White Sox struggled offensively in Sunday’s 5-1 defeat against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, before a crowd of 26,225. The team did not manage a hit until Drew Romo achieved a single in the sixth inning. His hit ended Twins starter Zebby Matthews’ pursuit of a perfect game.
Strong Pitching Performance by Minnesota’s Matthews
Matthews showed dominant pitching. He retired the first 17 batters, working effectively through the lineup. In the sixth, Romo worked a full count and eventually delivered a single to right field, disrupting Matthews’ perfect game chance. Matthews completed 8 1/3 innings, yielding one run on five hits, with no walks and five strikeouts.
Sox manager Will Venable praised Matthews, noting the effective pitching zone control. Despite the game outcome, the Sox made solid contact, though unlucky, as defensive plays and strategic positioning hindered their chances.
Decisive Two-Out Hits by the Twins
A series of timely hits by the Twins proved decisive. In the first inning, following a leadoff walk, the Sox could only manage a force at second. Josh Bell drove in a run on a single, and Trevor Larnach’s double added two more runs, all occurring with two outs.
Ryan Jeffers doubled in the third inning, scoring on another Bell single. In the seventh, Luke Keaschall homered, padding the Twins’ lead further. José Urquidy, pitching in bulk innings, rebounded from a recent poor start, allowing just one run over five innings with no walks.
Maintaining Division Lead Despite Setback
Despite the loss, the White Sox remain first in the American League Central. They exited the weekend with a 3 1/2 game lead over the Cleveland Guardians. The Twins sit 7 1/2 games behind. Though Sunday’s performance was disappointing, the team managed to win the series against the Twins. Looking ahead, the Sox prepare to face a significant series against the AL West-leading Houston Astros.
