Allegations Emerge Against Coach Whittingham

Michigan Wolverines head coach Kyle Whittingham faces scrutiny after former players from his tenure at the University of Utah reported serious concerns. Six ex-players, including defensive end Van Fillinger, have spoken to the local media.

In an interview with Jason Batacao of The Salt Lake Tribune, the players, part of the Utes team from 2020 to 2024, alleged they were pressured to return from injuries prematurely. Fillinger shared his experience in detail.

Fillinger stated that he broke his tibia and initially agreed with his position coach to take a redshirt season for recovery. Multiple weeks into the season, when another player suffered an ACL tear, Fillinger’s position coach informed him of altered plans.

Fillinger recalled, “Coach [Lewis Powell] came into rehab one day and said, ‘Hey, Van, coach [Kyle] Whittingham is not going to let you redshirt.’ I was shocked, thinking, ‘What the hell? I’ve already been out three games.’” He felt compelled to play due to threats of being removed from the team.

Regarding the allegations, Whittingham, now with Michigan, had questions directed to Utah. Michigan’s spokesperson asserted, “Coach Whittingham or his coaching staff did not make medical decisions [at Utah]. He followed the lead of the medical team.”

The University of Utah’s athletic department emphasized their commitment to student health. They stated that all guidelines were followed, reiterating that student welfare was paramount.

Another player, Jaylon Glover, offered a different perspective, noting discrepancies between the training and coaching staff’s priorities. He felt that the push for players to return was driven by the team’s needs.
