Texas Senate Race: Democratic Candidate Talarico Faces Two-Front Challenge

Representative James Talarico, a Texas Democratic Senate hopeful, is currently facing significant challenges in his campaign. He is in a close race with Republican contender Ken Paxton, the state’s Attorney General. Moreover, Jasmine Crockett, a congresswoman he overcame in the Democratic primary, has refused to actively campaign alongside him.

Dallas Representative Jasmine Crockett shared her intentions with CNN, explaining her choice to focus on downballot campaigning instead of joining Talarico. Although she congratulated Talarico after the primary and pledged her endorsement, her statements have prioritized party unity over personal enthusiasm.

Reflecting on past Democratic efforts, Crockett cited Beto O’Rourke’s narrow loss to Senator Ted Cruz in 2018 as an example of a strategy to avoid. She argued for spreading campaign focus to candidates lower on the ballot who may be overshadowed by major Senate races.

“We need a broader approach to engage voters, not just focus on a top-ticket candidate who raises all the funds but fails to win,” Crockett stated.

Regarding Black voters’ views on Talarico, Crockett noted a lack of excitement towards his candidacy. Nonetheless, she expects strong Democratic turnout, emphasizing the importance of their votes amidst Republican targets on Black lives.

A poll by Texas Southern University showed 79 percent of likely Black voters support Talarico, compared to 12 percent backing Paxton. This poll also indicated that Crockett’s primary loss is unlikely to affect voter turnout.

Addressing Crockett’s role, Talarico acknowledged her endorsement and stressed the necessity for party cohesion. During a recent interview with theGrio, he underscored her contributions and called for unity.

Talarico rebuked his supporters for criticisms of Crockett during a Houston town hall. Expressing respect for her, he denied past allegations of racially-charged comments against former Representative Colin Allred, clarifying his remarks on campaigning methods rather than personal attacks.

The November Face-Off

Texas remains a crucial battleground for Democrats in the upcoming midterms. Talarico has shown promising poll results against Paxton, with recent surveys showing a lead ranging from 3 to 6 points.

A survey conducted by Texas Public Opinion Research (TPOR) from August 21 to 24, 2026, revealed Talarico leading Paxton 48 percent to 42 percent, with as few as 7 percent of voters undecided. The shifting political landscape has positioned Texas into the “tossup” category by several political analysts, elevating its significance.

Though Texas hasn’t elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994, Talarico’s campaign indicates potential for change. His consistent polling lead over Paxton highlights the state’s strategic importance for Democrats aiming to secure an upper chamber majority.
