President Trump expressed his decision to commemorate this event at the Pentagon, saying, “Because I’m going to the Pentagon.” His choice departed from initial plans to visit New York City. According to The New York Times, Trump’s desire to speak at the Ground Zero program clashed with the event’s tradition of not allowing speeches. The White House, however, refuted this claim, labeling it as “FAKE NEWS,” and categorically denied any disagreements over speaking arrangements.
Reflecting on the terrorist attacks, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly emphasized President Trump’s sentiments. “On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, the President will remember those who were killed, honor their loved ones, and pay tribute to the brave first responders.” Her remarks highlight Trump’s continued commitment to recognizing the sacrifices made by Americans on that day.
Trump has routinely marked September 11 anniversaries during his time in office. His previous observances include appearances at the Pentagon in 2017 and 2019, as well as Shanksville, Pennsylvania, in 2018 and 2020. In 2024, he took part in the Ground Zero ceremony alongside then-President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
Last year’s commemoration saw Trump visit the Pentagon before heading to a New York Yankees game, which paid tribute to the victims. He also engaged with New York City by visiting a fire station and police precinct in 2021.
