Florida Driver Faces Charges After School Bus Collision

An incident involving a Florida driver fleeing a traffic stop culminated in a head-on collision with a school bus carrying 19 children. Authorities reported that the driver abandoned the damaged vehicle and fled on foot. The incident, which occurred on a Tuesday morning, was captured on video. Fortunately, none of the children aboard the bus sustained injuries.

Details of the Incident

The suspect, identified as Qahiem Williams, 23, faces multiple charges. The incident occurred around 7:20 a.m. A deputy conducting traffic enforcement near The Villages Intermediate Center noticed Williams driving 17 mph over the speed limit on County Road 466. As the deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, Williams allegedly accelerated and sideswiped two vehicles at a traffic light.

The collisions reportedly damaged the vehicle’s axle, leading to the collision with the Sumter County school bus on County Road 103. Footage from inside the bus captured the moment of impact, with Williams’ vehicle door seen opening moments before the crash. After the collision, Williams allegedly fled on foot. A deputy, captured on body camera footage, pursued and apprehended him near a Walmart.

Charges and Prior Warrants

Williams was taken into custody and faces charges including fleeing or eluding, driving with a suspended license, possession of marijuana, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting an officer, and hit-and-run. Authorities also noted Williams had two outstanding warrants for similar offenses.

Community Response

Sumter County Sheriff Patrick Breeden criticized Williams’ actions, stating they endangered children’s lives. “I have zero tolerance when it comes to actions that put our children’s lives in danger,” Breeden stated. Williams was medically cleared and is currently held without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.
