Iran’s recent threats towards Europe, particularly Bulgaria, have stirred discussions about its willingness to directly confront European nations to dissuade them from supporting U.S. military efforts. Bulgaria, a key trading partner for Iran in Eastern Europe, was considered a potential target if former President Trump heightened conflicts, according to The Financial Times. This stems from Bulgaria’s strategic location and the presence of U.S. Air Force refueling planes supporting Operation Epic Fury at a Bulgarian base.

After Bulgaria announced the refueling planes’ withdrawal, Iran issued warnings to NATO countries, emphasizing its right to retaliate against any aggression from American or Israeli bases. Iran previously threatened the United Kingdom, demonstrated by a drone strike on a British airbase in Cyprus in March, and launched ballistic missiles at the Diego Garcia base.

Analysts believe Iran aims to project a readiness to take action but remains cautious about a full-blown confrontation with NATO. Instead, Iran uses coercion as a strategy, threatening countries that support the U.S. military, thereby attempting to destabilize allied unity. Tehran aims to increase the perceived cost of aiding the U.S. without engaging in direct attacks.
