Wyndham Clark Faces Scrutiny During BMW Championship Victory

The incident occurred on the Par 4 14th hole when Clark’s tee shot landed in the rough. The CBS broadcast captured Clark’s pre-shot routine, showing him switching irons several times. His caddie, David Pelekoudas, stood between Clark and the camera during this process. CBS analysts Trevor Immelman and Frank Nobilo commented on the situation. Immelman noted, “He’s taking a long look at this. This is like the third club that he’s placed down behind the ball there,” to which Nobilo replied, “So the lie might be better.” These comments, paired with online accusations, made the moment a hot topic.

“I think any player, when they’re trying to judge a lie, takes out different clubs to see what it feels like,” Clark explained. “I never fully put the club down behind it. I don’t think anything of it.”

In a news conference before the Tour Championship, Clark addressed the viral incident. He reiterated that he did not improve his lie by placing multiple irons behind the ball. He emphasized that the lie was legal according to USGA Rule 8.1b(4), which permits players to “ground the club lightly right in front of or right behind the ball.” Clark clarified that his actions were about assessing the lie, not manipulating it.

Clark faced similar accusations earlier at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills. Despite these challenges, Clark has earned three victories in 2026, placing him third in the FedEx Cup standings, behind Matt Fitzpatrick and leader Scottie Scheffler.
