President Donald Trump intensified his verbal conflict with Canada by proposing a name change for Lake Ontario to “Lake America”. This move follows his accusation that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney lied regarding U.S. positions on French-language protections.
Trump stated on Truth Social that the United States is seriously considering this renaming as business relations with Ontario were expected to diminish. He also rejected Carney’s claims that the U.S. had sought concessions related to the French language during recent trade talks, which ended without an agreement.
“I would never interfere with Canadians speaking French,” Trump wrote. “This lie was fabricated by a weak and ineffective Prime Minister to gain political support, which he has lost, from the people of Quebec.”
These statements represent the latest escalation in the strained relations between Washington and Ottawa. After the trade negotiations failed last week, new tariffs and threats of retaliation emerged between the two countries.
Carney, speaking in Quebec, defended Canada’s stance, emphasizing the importance of French-language protections, which he said were not negotiable. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer countered, labeling Carney’s statement as unfounded, noting the U.S. objections related to tech industry regulations instead.
Ontario’s significant role in the U.S.-Canadian auto industry adds weight to Trump’s suggested renaming, heightening tensions in the economic standoff.
Vice President JD Vance supported the administration’s firm stance, criticizing Canada for favorable treatment of Chinese goods over American products. Addressing an audience in Maine, Vance described this situation as unjust.
Furthermore, Trump announced a future 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles, auto parts, trucks, and steel, accusing Canada of unfair practices against American industry.
Despite the heightened rhetoric, Vance mentioned the possibility of returning to negotiations, hoping for a fair trade agreement.
