In a recent incident, six migrants deported by the United States found themselves sent to Equatorial Guinea instead of their intended destination, Liberia. This unexpected turn of events highlights the complexities and challenges of the current immigration practices.
The group involved in this incident included four Cuban men, a Brazilian man, and a Cameroonian woman. They resisted leaving the plane upon arrival in Liberia out of concern for their safety, stating that Liberia was “not their country.” This refusal led to their separation from other deportees and their subsequent transfer to Equatorial Guinea.
Meredyth Yoon, a litigation director at Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Atlanta, described their arrival in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, as “heartbreaking” and chaotic. Some of the deportees arrived in chains and were experiencing significant distress, particularly the Cameroonian woman and one of the Cuban men who requires medical attention due to a large abdominal growth and the use of a colostomy bag.
Conditions at the Bamy Hotel in Malabo have deteriorated, with reports of food being withheld and instances of guards threatening, beating, and choking some migrants. Despite these concerns, Equatorial Guinea’s government has not responded to requests for comment.
This situation arises as part of a $7.5 million agreement between the Trump administration and Equatorial Guinea, under which the hotel has been converted into a holding facility for deported asylum seekers. The arrangements occasionally send individuals to third countries instead of directly to their home countries.
Among those affected by this policy is 35-year-old Carlos Rodríguez López, previously residing in Miami Gardens, Florida. His sudden deportation shocked his family, particularly his wife, Igrayne Ribot. She discovered his location after a video call confirmed he was in Africa, a revelation she found terrifying and unexpected.
