The traditional rule for athletes in the NCAA was clear: Players who signed contracts with professional teams couldn’t return to play the same sport at the college level. However, this is changing.
This year, several players who participated in NFL training camps are returning to college football. A loophole in NCAA regulations has made this possible.
Bob Chesney, UCLA’s new head coach, shared his perspective, stating that college football is increasingly becoming similar to the minor leagues in Major League Baseball (MLB).
We’re slowly moving to more of a triple-A team for the NFL in a way. I think it is what it is,Chesney said, via Ben Bolch. There’s probably more stability in the NFL.
The NFL has avoided relying on a minor league system because of college football’s role. However, since players began receiving payment, college football has taken on a professional edge. The NCAA’s instability is now causing issues for NFL teams. This summer, some agents have asked to release players from the class of 2022 early from NFL training camps. These players are seeking college positions where they can earn more than on an NFL practice squad.
LSU is poised to sign its second player who initially played for Ole Miss before entering the NFL this offseason. Lane Kiffin, the Tigers’ head coach, justified his strategy to take advantage of such opportunities.
At the end of the day, because of these rulings, they’re either going to play for you or they’re going to play for someone else around the country,Kiffin said, via ESPN.So we’ve made the decision to recruit them like probably most people are.
For many of these athletes, college football proves more lucrative than struggling in the lower ranks of the NFL. For more on the NCAA, visit Newsweek Sports.
