On Sunday, LSU announced plans to sign tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who recently spent time with the Cleveland Browns. This decision raised eyebrows due to Wright’s previous stint in the NFL and his association with new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss last season.
The SEC’s intraconference transfer rule prohibits athletes from transferring within the conference unless during the spring transfer portal window. LSU argues that Wright’s move from the Browns does not violate this rule.
On Monday, LSU continued to add former Ole Miss players. According to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals, defensive lineman Zxavian Harris is joining the Tigers. Harris, who managed 58 tackles and three sacks with the Rebels, was waived by the Saints on Aug. 8.
Per On3, rival SEC schools want LSU penalized for allegedly circumventing the transfer rule. The Tigers plan to keep Wright on the roster, alongside Harris.
Kiffin expressed players should have freedom in their fifth year. “These kids, if they get a fifth year, they should be able to go wherever they want,” Kiffin stated. “Any conference. Anywhere.”
LSU’s moves challenge the SEC’s policies. The team’s strategy invites a potential showdown with the conference.
