Hawk Fire Threatens Reno Neighborhoods, Causes Mass Evacuations

A wildfire erupted over the weekend in the Sierra Nevada foothills, spreading dangerously close to Reno, Nevada neighborhoods. Authorities urged over 90,000 residents to evacuate their homes. Despite containment efforts, the fire continued to threaten newly developed and densely populated areas around Nevada’s second-largest city.

The fire, known as the Hawk Fire, began on Saturday and rapidly expanded, consuming more than 23 square miles of land by Sunday. The fire affected several neighborhoods near the California state line, resulting in the closure of schools across the county on Monday to facilitate emergency operations.

Authorities reported that the Hawk Fire maintained its footprint while firefighters worked to extinguish hotspots and prevent the blaze from crossing a major highway, risking areas filled with homes and businesses. At least six individuals sustained injuries, including both first responders and civilians.

Officials identified the fire as “human-caused,” though details on whether the ignition was intentional or accidental remain undisclosed. Social media footage showed devastated homes and vehicles; a solitary scorched basketball hoop stood among the ruins.

Residents had minimal time to evacuate as the fire’s size rapidly increased. Ruby Delatorre, returning from a concert, found her home in the evacuation zone. Though saddened by the situation, she managed to retrieve some belongings.

Teresa Lenshyn, another evacuee, described the evacuation as chaotic and stressful, worrying about unpredictable winds potentially worsening conditions.

This incident marks the third significant wildfire in the rugged terrain north of Reno within two weeks, all deemed to be human-induced. The ongoing drought across the American West has contributed to numerous wildfires, with eastern Washington state experiencing similar evacuations earlier in August.

The National Interagency Fire Center recorded over 50,000 wildfires nationwide—a record high for the past decade’s comparable timeline.
