Deshaun Watson Reacts to Fan Response After Preseason Game

Deshaun Watson faced criticism during the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, where his performance included completing only 5 of 12 passes for 36 yards and an interception, ending with boos from fans after his poor showing.

Watson took the reaction personally. He expressed displeasure with his fan base, referencing past experiences, including when they celebrated his Achilles injury that sidelined him for much of the 2024 season and the entirety of the 2025 season due to re-injury.

The whole world knows it has nothing to do about the performance, Watson remarked. It’s a little bit more personal than that. So I think it’s a disrespectful thing. He continued to say that the internal feelings he has will remain with him and his family.

Watson highlighted the lack of empathy from fans, questioning their reaction when he was injured while playing for them.

Head coach Todd Monken addressed Watson’s emotional response, indicating it came from a place of hurt rather than character. Monken noted Watson’s work ethic and desire to return to form, and he suggested the post-game emotions were understandable given the circumstances.

Monken confirmed that Watson’s comments will not affect the choice for Cleveland’s starting quarterback. Watson’s poor performance contrasted with Shedeur Sanders, who completed 9 of 11 passes for 74 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Monken has not decided who will start Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 13.
