Harrison Butker Shines with a 69-Yard Field Goal in Chiefs Preseason Game

Harrison Butker showed impressive form during the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason clash against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday night. Approaching halftime, Butker attempted a 69-yard field goal and expertly sent it through the uprights, granting the Chiefs a 9-0 advantage before the break. Had this kick occurred in the regular season, it would have shattered the NFL record for the longest field goal, currently held by Cam Little of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Little made his record-setting 68-yard kick against the Las Vegas Raiders last November.

Butker’s prowess isn’t new. He holds the record for the longest field goal in Super Bowl history with a 57-yard success during Super Bowl LVIII against the San Francisco 49ers. This achievement dethroned Jake Moody’s earlier mark, which he set in the same Super Bowl.

Despite his brilliance, Butker faced challenges in the game, including missing an extra point and a potential 43-yard game-winning field goal. These misses contributed to the Chiefs’ narrow 16-15 loss against the Buccaneers, leaving Butker dissatisfied despite his striking 69-yard highlight.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, along with his teammates, rallied around Butker in celebration of his remarkable kick. Yet, Butker emphasized the importance of his overall performance, stating, “You’ve got to make your kicks. Miss an extra point, miss a game-winner. That’s what I care about, not the 69-yarder or whatever it was.” He reflected on how big kicks often led to struggles in finishing games, adding, “Maybe I need some more caffeine for the second half or something.”

A penalty from the Chiefs nullified Butker’s initial extra-point attempt, which then bounced off the upright when retried following an Emmett Johnson touchdown. The Chiefs head coach Andy Reid commented, “Butker, until the last field goal, had a heck of a day. But he’ll be the first to tell you that’s the one he’ll remember. He’ll learn from it and move on. He’s made enough of those big ones for us that we know what he can do.”

Looking ahead, the Chiefs will face the Seattle Seahawks in their final preseason game on Friday night.
