U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum emphasized the nation’s need to secure victory in the race for artificial intelligence superiority over China to maintain its global economic leadership. This stance emerges amid discussions prompted by a recent Fox News poll revealing a divided opinion among voters on the expansion of local data centers.
Fetterman and AI Development
Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania dismissed fears surrounding AI, urging the U.S. to continue developing AI technologies. He highlighted the potential benefits that China could gain from any U.S. overreactions. In an article shared on X, Fetterman pointed to a Bloomberg analysis that showed a narrowing lead of the U.S. over China in AI capabilities, with Chinese companies deploying advanced AI models more rapidly.
Fetterman stressed that AI advancements are vital for national security, stating, “AI supremacy and energy dominance underpin our national security.” He argued against pulling back on emerging technologies, asserting that doing so would advantage America’s competitors.
Aligning with Trump on AI Expansion
Fetterman’s views align with former President Donald Trump on the need for aggressive AI development and expansion of the nation’s data center infrastructure. Fetterman responded negatively to Senator Bernie Sanders’ suggestion of halting AI development, arguing that such a move would aid China. He stated, “America must lead in the development of AI, otherwise we live under China’s rules.”
Earlier in March, Fetterman vocally opposed a proposed moratorium on new AI data centers, labeling the proposal as favoring “China First.”
Economic Impact of AI Data Centers
President Trump recently advocated for the construction of AI data centers, highlighting the substantial job creation and tax revenue they generate. He encouraged local officials to welcome these facilities, emphasizing the large-scale employment opportunities they present.
Despite Trump’s support, some Americans express concerns over the environmental impact of AI data centers. A Gallup poll conducted in May revealed that many oppose building new data centers near residential areas, citing issues like electricity and water consumption.
Regulating the Expanding AI Industry
In response to concerns, Trump signed an executive order in July to expedite the permitting process for data centers. He acknowledged the potential of AI, remarking, “We’re leading by a lot with AI. We want to keep it that way.” He advocated for regulation that allows continued leadership in AI without stifling the industry.
