FIFA President’s Controversial Presence at Caribbean Tournament

Gianni Infantino, the FIFA president, made an appearance at the Under-14 soccer event in the Caribbean despite being advised against it by Victor Montagliani, one of his FIFA vice presidents. Montagliani, who is also the president of the Miami-based CONCACAF, had requested Infantino to reconsider his attendance due to the ongoing controversy surrounding FIFA.

Infantino’s presence at the event during the global uproar over his failed proposal to sell future World Cup profits to private investors attracted significant attention. Infantino posted photos on Instagram showing his meetings with political and soccer officials from the Dominican Republic during the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) youth tournament in Punta Cana.

Montagliani expressed concern through an emailed letter seen by The Associated Press, stating that Infantino’s attendance would divert focus away from the technical aspects of the event. FIFA chose not to comment on this request but highlighted its direct funding to regional bodies like the CFU.

The controversy stemmed from Infantino’s proposal to transfer FIFA’s commercial activities to a subsidiary partially owned by investors led by Joshua Kushner. This plan was met with opposition from various soccer leaders, including FIFA vice presidents Aleksander Ceferin and Sheik Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa. The proposal was withdrawn on August 1 after backlash, coinciding with criticism from FIFA’s COO, Kevin Lamour, who was recently dismissed.

Concerns over Infantino’s leadership are evident, as Caribbean federations are potential supporters for Infantino, providing him leverage against CONCACAF leadership. Meanwhile, the South American body CONMEBOL supports Infantino for hosting more games at the expanded 2030 World Cup.

Infantino has avoided public inquiries since the proposal was revealed, evading a question from Sky News reporter James Matthews in Punta Cana. Despite the controversy, Infantino aims to be re-elected for a fourth term through 2031, with a deadline for candidates set for November 18.
