Giancarlo Stanton Faces Another Injury Setback in Difficult Season

4 weeks ago 0

Giancarlo Stanton’s challenging season continues with another injury setback. The 36-year-old New York Yankees player was recovering from a strained right calf when he sustained a strain to his left calf while running the bases. This new injury brings uncertainty to his 2026 season.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone commented, “It’s a moderate grade. We’re not ruling anything out. He’ll keep working to get it right, but the calendar is against us. We’re disappointed for him.” Stanton has put in daily effort to recover, hoping to return and contribute to the team’s championship goals.

The recent injury occurred as Stanton was running between second and third base during a game against the Houston Astros on April 24. Despite nearing a return in June, he experienced another strain on the same leg. He had begun running again and even practiced at-bats with Carlos Rodón, who was on the injured list for an elbow injury.

Boone expressed sympathy saying, “It’s been a tough road for him. We hope he can still be in the mix by the season’s end.” Stanton’s absence is significant for the Yankees, who have struggled offensively since Aaron Judge’s injury in June. In 24 games, Stanton has a .256 average, with three home runs and 14 RBIs.

Injuries have affected Stanton’s career with the Yankees, preventing him from playing a full season since his 2018 debut. He has missed 266 of 708 games over five seasons due to various strains and inflammations. Notably, his 2024 performance helped the Yankees reach their first World Series since 2009.

Despite missing 28 games in 2024, Stanton hit 27 homers and had 72 RBIs. In 2025, he missed 70 games but contributed significantly upon returning. The Yankees, trailing the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, aim to reach the top without their star hitter for the time being.
