Russian Missile Barrage Strikes Kyiv, Causing Casualties and Destruction

43 minutes ago 0

In a severe missile attack overnight Thursday, Russia targeted Kyiv, resulting in at least 12 fatalities as explosions echoed through the capital. Local authorities confirmed the tragic incident that marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.

According to Ukraine’s Emergency Service, at least 33 individuals sustained injuries in this latest strike. The air raid alert continued to sound alarms into the early Thursday morning, indicating the continued threat of further attacks.

The rampage affected 12 sites across Kyiv’s Darnytskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Solomianskyi districts. The strikes caused substantial damage to residential complexes, a medical clinic, and an educational institution. Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to rescue those trapped in the wreckage.

Significant destruction occurred in the Solomianskyi district, where the top two floors of a nine-story building were obliterated, sparking fires on several floors. Residents were trapped in two apartment buildings and a school shelter, illustrating the severity of the attack.

In the aftermath, 60-year-old Larysa Bondaruk recounted the chaos she witnessed. Holding her cat rescued by firefighters, she described debris and devastation around her damaged apartment. She shared the heart-wrenching news of her neighbor’s grandson perishing under the debris.

“A rocket hit the roof. It was incredibly loud; debris and doors were blown out. Smoke and fire filled the building, accompanied by screams and cries of despair,” she explained. “Two people died in our building, but rescuers responded quickly. I am grateful to them.”

Reports indicate that Russia has scaled up its missile assaults on Kyiv, aiming to deplete the city’s air defense resources. While Kyiv can intercept some threats, its supplies, particularly for U.S.-manufactured Patriot defense systems, remain critically low.

Initially, former President Donald Trump had allowed Ukraine to license production of these systems. However, he later retracted this decision, adding complexity to Kyiv’s air defense strategies.

In a counteroffensive, Ukraine has intensified its strikes on strategic sites within Russia to limit Moscow’s offensive capabilities on Ukrainian soil. This reciprocal escalation marks a distressing development, posing ongoing threats to civilian safety and infrastructure.
