Prince Harry and Meghan Return to the UK

Prince Harry and Meghan have returned to the United Kingdom, yet they will not resume duties as active members of the royal family. British media reported this shift on Wednesday night.

The couple’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, registered for British schools, commencing in September. The family plans to reside in a private home outside London. Harry and Meghan relocated to California over six years ago, resigning from royal responsibilities to pursue profitable deals with companies like Netflix and Spotify.

Relations with the royal family deteriorated, yet Harry has shown interest in mending ties to spend quality time with his father, King Charles III, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Charles learned of their plans recently, without prior notification during their recent UK visit. Buckingham Palace maintains a no-comment policy on rumors about non-active royals, while the couple’s representative chose not to remark.

Harry and Meghan’s challenging ties with the royal family began after their move to Montecito, California. In Harry’s memoir “Spare” and interviews, they expressed seeking relief from royal life constraints and criticized palace officials’ disregard for Meghan’s mental health. Additionally, they alleged racial comments from a royal member during Meghan’s first pregnancy.

Harry’s legal disputes with UK tabloids, alleging privacy invasion, have intensified tensions. He faced losses in lawsuits, including one against the Daily Mail publisher, leading to potential legal fees amounting to millions of pounds. Associated Newspapers’ legal expenses reached £34.5 million ($47 million).

Harry’s legal battle with the British government involved refusal of police protection authorization for his family in the UK. He argued for armed security due to risks associated with their royal affiliation. He lost the case but hoped for familial reconciliation, expressing a desire for peace with the BBC.

Recent charity events marked Harry’s tentative reconciliation efforts with his family. Meghan and their children joined Harry during his UK visit, spending time at King Charles’ Highgrove estate. They had not seen their grandfather since Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee in 2022.

Though Harry reconnected with his father, relations with Prince William remain strained. Ex-BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt suggested Harry’s return might escalate tensions with William, yet may encourage further bonding with his father.
